Spring / Summer 2009 ~ Easter and Ancient Thinking

"Just in time for Easter."

We've come a long way since 1956 when this photo represented a common present.
Or have we?

Old-time perceptions will keep registers at pet shops bustling.

Media displays will portray rabbits as cute, cuddly, non-hormonal, non-chewing, and easy to care for. The ancient thinking that rabbits are simple to have, then photographed in family portraits at Easter, makes an informed rabbit guardian shudder.

Fact: Rabbits are the third-most surrendered pet at shelters.

Highly misunderstood.

Just as affectionate as a dog or cat, 'though not as easy. All depends on the efforts and commitment you make.

While typing this Easter issue, Gina's family brought smiles with this note. "I can not believe it has been almost a year with Gina! How quickly time goes. Gina has been a joy to have around! I can not see how anyone can complain that they are difficult to take care of or clean. She is one of the easiest pets to take care of, and how adaptable she is. - Lisa

We experience the companionship, unconditional return (i.e., rest and be-with-me comfort factor) a rabbit provides. Some buns hop into our laps, or give kisses! Recline on the sofa, and watch TV.

Thankfully we've learned more since 1956, in veterinary care and education for rabbits as beloved members of the family.

Ever see a rabbit purr? Those contented tooth purrs make an understanding human sigh and smile.

Extra smiles are featured here; Gina, Gigi, foursome antics.
