Labor of Love- Euthanasia -

Dr. Diane Bennetts of Small Animal Hospital in Milwaukee encourages a peaceful euthanasia transition. Several bun parents have told me that a quiet room is selected, with a couch, and Dr. Bennetts lets you spend as much time with your beloved companion before a final injection is administered.
Kathy Smith includes the chapter Knowing When to Say Goodbye in Rabbit Health in the 21st Century. She lists several ways DVMs will go about a PTS decision. Kathy's depth of experiences via Dr. Noella Allan is knowledge to keep in mind. K' shared notes with me from rabbit parents that she knows. * You've also told your personal experiences...
The Harcourt-Brown Textbook of Rabbit Medicine says rabbits may scream/cry - an alarm response to unpleasant stimuli while undergoing light anesthesia. Even with the most skilled and compassionate veterinarian, there is no way to detect who will cry out. Perhaps a vet has heard a rabbit scream in a cone mask. My friend witnessed her girl screaming while cone masked, as I did. Traumatic to us, as owners, on top of the heart-breaking decision we are making.
Speak to others who can advise. I urge you to take the most peaceful means of transition; Room & setting-wise, and knowing the sentient being your rabbit is! A traumatic experience will never be forgotten.
When we are facing this difficult decision (again), a numbing agent will be requested prior to a catheter insertion in a front or hind arm/leg. A "drowsy" drug can be given. The decision will be a thousand times less traumatic when holding our beloved bunny or family member.

In April a multitude of rabbits were brought to a high-volume shelter. Not enough room at the shelter, hence an urgent plea is circulated to rescue org's. Babies were born because the individual did not separate the genders or have the group of co-existing rabbits altered. You'll be seeing bun faces on our Petfinder listings as we publicize their desire for a forever home. K&R Small Animal Sanctuary, Rescue & Rehome made it possible for several jeopardized "kids" to jump to RESCUE. SRR fosterers in IL are helping rabbits from this overwhelming scenario as time, space, and funding allow. If you can help with a small contribution, the items will go directly to their care.
As of this moment, Appleby, Heather, Fauna, Clover, Blossom, and Angeline are delighted to obtain a foster berth!
Your referrals will help unwanted rabbits find forever-caring homes.
'til we meet again,
